Central bank eyes wider powers
The Bank of Canada is considering broader powers to keep the country's financial markets functioning during future credit crunches. But economists warn that the central bank must avoid the impression that it's there to bail out bad investment decisions. In response to lessons learned during this summer's credit market meltdown, the Bank of Canada will explore the ability to lend money for longer terms and against a wider range of collateral, deputy governor Pierre Duguay said in a speech yesterday in Quebec City. As loan markets seized up around the world and Canada struggled with its asset-backed commercial paper crisis, the central bank tried to flood the market with money to grease the grinding wheels of the financial system. However, the central bank's powers are limited to overnight loans.
Carnegie Mellon algorithm identifies top 100 blogs for news
PITTSBURGH� Being among the first to pick up on Internet news and gossip and rapidly detecting contamination anywhere in a water supply system are similar problems, at least from a computer scientist�s point of view. Both can be solved with a versatile algorithm developed by Carnegie Mellon University researchers. Using a problem-solving method called the Cascades algorithm, Carlos Guestrin, assistant professor of computer science and machine learning, and his students compiled a list of the best 100 blogs to read to find the biggest news on the Web as early as possible, http://www.blogcascades.org/. It includes well-known blogs, such as Instapundit and Boing Boing, but also some more obscure ones like Watcher of Weasels and Don Surber. �The goal of our system when looking at blogs is to detect the big stories as early on and as close to the source as possible,� Guestrin said.
Bank Rakyat issues first credit card
PETALING JAYA: Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Bhd (Bank Rakyat) targets to secure about 200,000 subscribers within two years for its first credit card, due to be launched by the first quarter of 2008. Managing director Datuk Kamaruzaman Che Mat expressed confidence that the timing was right to venture into the credit card market and Bank Rakyat aimed to market the yet-to-be-named syariah-compliant Islamic credit card to all its eligible members, its existing 2.5 million customer base and the general public. �We are optimistic that within the next five years we would be able to secure about one million subscribers for our card. The local credit card industry had 9.53 million subscribers as at Sept 30 and the Islamic credit card market only contributes about 1% of the total credit card transactions, or RM369mil currently.
